You leave your PC on overnight, it says "Updating — do not turn off your computer," and you go to bed feeling vaguely virtuous. By morning it's either stuck on a spinning circle, booting into a black screen, or running so slowly that opening your email feels like loading a webpage over dial-up. Sound familiar? You're not alone. Broken Windows updates are one of the most common things we see walk through the door.
The maddening part is that you did everything right. You didn't install dodgy software, you didn't click anything suspicious — you just let Windows do its thing. So what went wrong?
Why Windows Updates Go Wrong in the First Place
Microsoft releases updates for genuinely good reasons: patching security holes, fixing bugs, keeping Windows compatible with new hardware and software. The trouble is that Windows runs on an enormous variety of hardware — millions of different combinations of processors, graphics cards, drivers and installed software. No matter how much testing Microsoft does, something somewhere will occasionally clash.
The most common culprits behind a bad update are:
- Outdated device drivers — particularly graphics or network drivers that haven't been updated to match the new Windows version
- Old or corrupted system files that were already struggling before the update pushed them over the edge
- A nearly-full hard drive — updates need working space to install properly, and if there isn't enough, things can go badly wrong
- Failing hardware — an ageing hard drive or faulty RAM that was limping along fine until the update process stressed it
- Antivirus software that interferes with the update process mid-install
In many cases the update itself isn't the real villain — it's just the thing that finally exposed a problem that was already quietly brewing.
What to Try Straight Away
If your PC is misbehaving after an update, here are the first things worth attempting before you panic or call anyone.
- Give it time. Some updates continue finalising in the background after the first reboot. If the machine is slow but working, leave it alone for 20–30 minutes and try again.
- Restart it properly. Not sleep, not hibernate — a full Shut Down and then power on. This clears far more than simply pressing the power button on a sleeping machine.
- Try the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters and run the Windows Update one. It's not magic, but it does fix a surprising number of stuck or partially-installed updates.
- Check your disk space. Open File Explorer, right-click your C: drive and check Properties. If you've got less than 10 GB free, that's a real problem. Emptying the Recycle Bin and running Disk Cleanup (search for it in the Start menu) can free up enough breathing room to let the update retry properly.
- Roll back the update. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Update History → Uninstall Updates, find the most recent one, and remove it. This doesn't always appear as an option, but when it does it can get you back to where you were quickly.
When the PC Won't Even Boot Properly
If Windows won't load at all — you're getting a black screen, an error code, or it keeps restarting in a loop — the approach is slightly different.
Force-restart the machine three times in a row by holding the power button the moment the Windows logo appears. After the third time, Windows should drop into the Automatic Repair environment rather than trying to boot normally. From there you can attempt Startup Repair, or use System Restore to roll the machine back to a point before the update ran.
System Restore doesn't touch your personal files — it only affects system settings and software — so it's usually safe to try. If restore points are available (they should be, unless your PC has them disabled), this is often the quickest fix.
If none of that works and you're faced with a machine that simply won't come back to life, that's the point to stop experimenting and get it looked at. Pushing further without knowing what's wrong can occasionally make data recovery harder later.
The Slower-But-Working Version of a Bad Update
Not every bad update is dramatic. Some just leave the PC noticeably slower, or break something specific — the printer stops working, the audio disappears, the Wi-Fi becomes unreliable. These are almost always driver conflicts, where the update has replaced a working driver with a newer one that doesn't play nicely with your hardware.
The fix here is usually to visit the manufacturer's website for your specific device (your printer brand, your laptop maker, your graphics card brand) and download the latest driver directly from them rather than relying on what Windows picked. It sounds fiddly, but it resolves the vast majority of post-update device problems.

Should You Delay Windows Updates to Stay Safe?
It's tempting, after an experience like this, to simply turn updates off. Please don't. The security patches that come through Windows Update are genuinely important — the kind that protect you from ransomware, password theft and the sort of malware that spreads without you clicking anything at all. Switching updates off entirely trades a small inconvenience for a serious risk.
What you can do is delay them slightly. Windows 11 and Windows 10 both let you pause updates for up to five weeks (Settings → Windows Update → Pause Updates). That gives a few weeks for other people to discover any major problems and for Microsoft to issue a fix, while still keeping you reasonably current. It's a sensible middle ground.
The other genuinely useful habit is to make sure you have a recent backup before any major update runs. If your files are safely copied somewhere — an external drive, a cloud service, anything — then even a catastrophic update failure becomes an inconvenience rather than a disaster.
The Practical Takeaway
Windows updates go wrong less often than people think, but when they do, it's almost never random bad luck. There's usually an underlying cause — old drivers, a struggling hard drive, not enough free space — that the update process has surfaced. Fixing the symptom (the broken update) without addressing the cause means the next update will likely cause trouble too.
