It makes absolutely no sense on the face of it. You wander around the house with your laptop — kitchen, sofa, even the loo — and the Wi-Fi is perfectly fine. But the moment you sit down at your desk, where you actually need to get work done, the signal drops to one bar and pages take an age to load. Or worse, you drop off video calls entirely.
This is one of the most common complaints we hear. And the cause is almost never what people expect.
It's Usually Not Your Router — and It's Not Your Laptop Either
The instinct is to blame one or the other: either the router is rubbish or the laptop is playing up. But in most cases, the culprit is something sitting quietly between the two — and you've probably never given it a second thought.
Wi-Fi signals travel as radio waves, and like all radio waves, they get absorbed, reflected and blocked by the stuff in your home. The particular things that cause the most grief are:
- Thick stone or brick walls — extremely common in older Kent properties, and absolutely murderous for 5GHz Wi-Fi
- Metal filing cabinets, radiators and steel shelving — these reflect the signal rather than letting it pass through
- Cordless phone base stations and baby monitors — they compete on the same radio frequencies
- Microwave ovens — yes, genuinely, they leak interference when running
- Mirrors and fish tanks — both block signals far more than you'd think
Your desk is often on the other side of one (or several) of these obstacles from the router. The sofa might have a clear line of sight. Your desk doesn't.
The 5GHz vs 2.4GHz Thing You've Probably Never Heard Of
Modern routers broadcast two separate Wi-Fi signals simultaneously — one on 2.4GHz and one on 5GHz. They often share the same network name, so your device picks between them automatically without telling you.
Here's the key difference: 5GHz is faster but shorter range. It struggles badly with walls and distance. 2.4GHz is slower but travels much further and passes through solid objects more easily.
What happens at your desk is often this: your laptop has grabbed the 5GHz signal because it was marginally stronger when you first connected, but now — two rooms and a stone wall later — that 5GHz signal is barely reaching you. Meanwhile the perfectly adequate 2.4GHz signal is right there, being ignored.
The fix can sometimes be as simple as splitting your router's two bands into separate named networks (your internet provider's helpline can usually walk you through this), so you can deliberately connect your desk machine to 2.4GHz.
The Channel Congestion Problem Nobody Mentions
Wi-Fi channels are a bit like radio stations. Your router broadcasts on one, and so do all your neighbours' routers. If everyone on your street is on the same channel, they're all interfering with each other.
This matters more in some spots than others. Your desk might be on the side of the house closest to a neighbour whose router is blasting away on the same channel. The sofa, being further away, doesn't suffer the same interference.
Most routers can automatically pick the least congested channel, but they only do this check when they restart. If your router hasn't been rebooted in months — and most people's haven't — it's probably sitting on a busy channel it picked when you first set it up.
A simple router reboot (unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in) is worth doing. It's free, takes two minutes, and you'd be surprised how often it helps.
When the Real Fix Is a Physical One
Sometimes there's no clever setting to change — the router is simply too far away, or there are too many solid obstacles in between. In that case, you have a few practical options:
- Powerline adapters — these send your internet signal through your home's existing electrical wiring. You plug one adapter in near your router, another near your desk, connect both with ethernet cables, and suddenly you have a rock-solid wired connection wherever you need it. They cost around £30–60 for a decent pair and work brilliantly in older buildings where Wi-Fi struggles.
- A Wi-Fi extender or mesh node — a wireless extender placed roughly halfway between your router and your desk can boost the signal into that dead zone. Mesh systems (where several units work together as one network) are the more elegant solution if you want seamless coverage throughout a whole house or office.
- A long ethernet cable — unglamorous, but a direct cable from your router to your desk is still the most reliable connection possible. If your desk is permanent and the route is manageable, it's often the best answer.
One Quick Check Before You Do Anything Else
Before you buy anything or change any settings, do this: move your laptop to sit right next to your router and run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net. Note the result. Then go back to your desk and run it again.
If the speed at the router is fine but terrible at your desk, the problem is definitely the Wi-Fi path between the two — and the fixes above apply. If the speed is bad even sitting next to the router, the issue is your broadband connection itself, and that's a conversation to have with your internet provider.
It sounds obvious, but this one test tells you immediately where to focus — and saves you spending money solving the wrong problem.

A Wi-Fi dead zone at your desk is almost never a fault with your equipment. It's physics: walls, interference, distance and radio frequency behaviour.
