Margaret — not her real name, but she'd have approved of it — was absolutely convinced her broadband provider was trying to drive her mad. Every morning, somewhere between half nine and ten o'clock, her internet would simply stop. Not slow down. Not get patchy. Just stop, completely, for anywhere between two and fifteen minutes, then quietly come back as if nothing had happened.
She'd called her ISP twice. Both times they ran a line test, found nothing, and sent her a new router. The second router behaved exactly like the first. Her son had visited and declared it "probably interference from next door." A neighbour had suggested it might be a microwave. Margaret herself had started unplugging the microwave before nine-thirty each morning, which hadn't helped but had at least given her a sense of control.
When she eventually brought her laptop into us, she was apologetic about it. "I know it's probably something silly," she said. "But it's been six months and I'm at the end of my tether."
What We Expected to Find
Intermittent connectivity faults are genuinely one of the trickier things to diagnose, because by the time a machine is on the bench, the fault often isn't happening. You poke around, everything looks fine, and you feel faintly embarrassed charging someone for the privilege.
The laptop itself was in decent shape — a mid-range Windows 11 machine, nothing obviously wrong. We ran through the usual checks: Wi-Fi adapter drivers, power management settings (Windows has an irritating habit of switching off the Wi-Fi adapter to save power — see if that rings any bells), and whether any software was scheduled to do something disruptive at a regular time.
The power management angle looked promising for about ten minutes. There's a setting buried in Windows that allows the system to turn off the wireless adapter to save energy, which can cause exactly this kind of drop-out. We disabled it. But when Margaret mentioned that her tablet — which had nothing to do with Windows — also lost internet at the same time each morning, we knew we were looking in the wrong place entirely.
The problem wasn't the laptop. It was something on the network itself.
The Question That Cracked It
We asked Margaret to describe her typical morning. She makes tea, sits down at about nine, checks her emails, does a bit of online shopping or reads the news. At some point she might print something — a recipe, a letter, a form.
"When do you usually print things?"
"Oh, I always do that first thing. Get it out of the way. I send things to the printer when I sit down, but it takes a while to warm up, so I just leave it."
"And the printer — it's wireless? Connected to the Wi-Fi?"
"Yes, it's one of those all-in-one things. Does scanning as well, though I've never worked out how."
There it was.
What Was Actually Happening
The printer — a popular inkjet all-in-one, the kind that sits on half the desks in Britain — had developed a fault with its IP address behaviour. Every morning when it powered up from sleep mode, it was broadcasting a request across the network for a new IP address with such enthusiasm that it was effectively flooding the router's DHCP service.
DHCP is the system your router uses to hand out addresses to every device on your network — your laptop gets one, your phone gets one, your smart TV gets one. It's normally invisible and instantaneous. But this printer, waking up each morning, was hammering the router with repeated requests in a tight loop. The router — a perfectly ordinary home router not built to handle that kind of tantrum — was stumbling, dropping all connections briefly while it tried to sort itself out, then recovering.
The timing was consistent because the printer's sleep timer was consistent. Half nine: printer wakes up, chaos ensues, everyone loses the internet for a few minutes.
This is the sort of fault that's almost impossible to diagnose without asking the right questions, because nothing looks broken. The laptop is fine. The router is fine. The ISP line is fine. The printer itself prints perfectly well once everything has settled down. It was only the combination of "same time every morning" and "other devices affected too" that pointed us toward the network rather than any single device.
How We Fixed It
The solution came in two parts. First, we gave the printer a static IP address — instead of asking the router for a new address every time it woke up, we told the printer to always use the same fixed address. No more frantic requests, no more router confusion.
Second, we updated the printer's firmware, which had not been touched since it left the factory several years earlier. There was an update available that specifically addressed stability issues with wireless reconnection. It took four minutes to install.
That was it. Problem solved. Six months of morning frustration, two replacement routers, one unplugged microwave — fixed by a static IP and a firmware update.
The Practical Lesson Here
A few things worth taking away from Margaret's story:
- When Wi-Fi drops affect multiple devices at once, the fault is almost certainly in the router or on the network — not in any individual device. Stop troubleshooting the laptop and start looking at what else is connected.
- Printers are underestimated culprits. They sit quietly on your desk for years, and most people never update their firmware or give them a second thought. A misbehaving printer can cause surprisingly wide disruption.
- Timing is a clue, not a coincidence. If something goes wrong at roughly the same time every day, something is being scheduled — a backup, a software update, a device waking from sleep. Follow the timing and you'll usually find the cause.
- ISPs are not always wrong when they say the line is fine. Sometimes the line really is fine and the problem is entirely inside your house.
- Firmware updates matter. Routers, printers, smart devices — they all have firmware, and manufacturers do fix bugs in it. It's worth checking once in a while, especially if something starts behaving strangely after months of working perfectly.
If your internet is doing something baffling and nobody can seem to find the cause, it's worth having someone go through the whole network methodically rather than focusing on just one device. Sometimes the answer is in the last place you'd think to look — sitting on your desk, warming up, waiting to print a recipe.
