You know the feeling. You sit down at your laptop, click on something, and wait. And wait. The little spinning circle appears. The fan starts up like a hairdryer. Nothing you do is obviously wrong — you haven't installed anything, you haven't changed any settings — and yet your computer, which worked perfectly last week, now feels like it's wading through treacle.
Nine times out of ten, when we see this in the shop, the culprit isn't a virus, a failing hard drive, or even Windows playing up. It's something sitting right there in plain sight at the top of the screen: a row of browser tabs, cheerfully open, slowly consuming every scrap of memory your machine has.
Why Browser Tabs Are Not as Innocent as They Look
Every open tab in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox is — to your computer — a small programme running in the background. It has its own chunk of memory (RAM) set aside for it. It may be running scripts. It might be checking for updates, refreshing content, or playing audio you've forgotten about. It doesn't matter whether you're actually looking at that tab. As far as your computer is concerned, it's still alive and it still needs feeding.
Open twenty tabs — a news site, your email, a YouTube video you paused, a recipe, three Amazon searches, a council planning portal, and a spreadsheet you meant to come back to — and you've potentially handed over 2–3 GB of RAM to your browser alone. On a laptop with 4 GB of RAM (still very common on machines bought even five or six years ago), that leaves almost nothing for anything else. Windows itself needs 2 GB just to stand up straight.
The result? Slowness. Freezing. The fan running constantly. And a pervasive sense that your computer is getting old, when really it's just overloaded.
How to See Exactly What's Being Used Right Now
Before you do anything else, it's worth checking whether this is actually your problem. On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click the Performance tab and look at the Memory graph. If it's sitting above 80–90% while you're just browsing, your RAM is genuinely under pressure.
On a Mac, open Activity Monitor (search for it in Spotlight) and check the Memory tab at the bottom. A red or orange Memory Pressure graph tells the same story.
You can also check inside Chrome or Edge by pressing Shift + Esc (Chrome) or going to the three-dot menu → More Tools → Browser Task Manager. You'll see every open tab listed with exactly how much memory it's consuming. Some will surprise you.
The Practical Fixes — in Order of Effort
You don't need to buy a new computer, and you don't need to become a monk who only ever opens one tab at a time. Here's what actually helps:
- Close tabs you've finished with. Obvious, but most people don't do it. If you're not going back to it today, close it. If you might need it later, bookmark it first — that costs nothing and uses no memory whatsoever.
- Use your browser's built-in tab sleep or memory saver. Both Chrome and Edge now have a Memory Saver mode (in Settings → Performance) that automatically suspends tabs you haven't visited in a while. It's turned off by default. Turn it on. It makes a noticeable difference.
- Restart your browser regularly. Not just the tabs — the whole browser. Over hours of use, browsers accumulate memory they don't properly release. A fresh restart clears this out.
- Restart your computer more often than you think you need to. Leaving a laptop in sleep mode for days on end is fine in theory, but memory fragmentation builds up. A proper shutdown and restart once a day — or even every couple of days — costs you thirty seconds and can restore a surprising amount of pep.
- Consider whether your RAM is simply too low for modern browsing. If you're consistently running 4 GB or less, even sensible tab habits will only take you so far. Modern websites are genuinely heavier than they were five years ago.
When More RAM Is the Real Answer
If you've tried all of the above and your machine is still groaning, it may simply not have enough physical RAM for the way you use it today. The good news is that on many laptops and most desktop PCs, RAM is one of the cheapest and most effective upgrades available. Going from 4 GB to 8 GB — or 8 GB to 16 GB — can genuinely transform the experience of a machine that otherwise has years of life left in it.

While you're at it, if your machine has a traditional spinning hard drive rather than an SSD, that's probably doing as much damage to your speed as the RAM situation. The two upgrades together — more RAM plus a solid-state drive — cost less than most people expect and routinely add three to five years to the working life of an otherwise capable machine.
The Practical Takeaway
If your computer has gone from nippy to sluggish for no obvious reason, open your browser, count how many tabs are sitting there, and try closing everything you don't actively need right now. Turn on Memory Saver in Chrome or Edge. Give the machine a proper restart. Then see how it feels.
You may find the problem solves itself in about three minutes, for free. And if it doesn't — if RAM genuinely is the bottleneck — then a modest upgrade is almost certainly cheaper and less disruptive than replacing the whole machine. Either way, you'll know exactly what you're dealing with rather than just hoping the slowness goes away on its own.
